Sweden-Finland military security cooperation

Overview

Sweden is increasing military support to Finland to bolster air and maritime surveillance along the 1,340-kilometre border with Russia. Following a request from Helsinki due to a deteriorating security situation and frequent drone airspace incursions, the Swedish military is deploying JAS 39 Gripen fighter jets to provide 24/7 airspace protection at air bases in Rovaniemi and Kuopio. This deployment, which includes Visby-class stealth frigates patrolling the Gulf of Finland and the Baltic Sea, is expected to last at least until the end of 2026. To address unauthorized drone activity, Sweden may contribute ground-based anti-drone systems later this autumn. Additionally, the Swedish defense company Saab has secured a 126 million dollar contract to supply Finland with RBS 70 NG portable air-defense missile systems. Expanding maritime security efforts, the naval commands of Finland and Sweden have announced a joint plan to acquire unmanned surface vessels. These maritime drones, which resemble sailboats and are equipped with sensors, cameras, and radar, could be operational as early as this year. Rear Admiral Tuomas Tiilikainen, commander of the Finnish Navy, stated that these vessels will transmit real-time situational data to help identify unknown vessels and determine if a standby warship is required. On September 24, 2026, the two nations conducted their first joint operational identification mission to intercept a Russian military formation over the Gulf of Finland. The Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) mission involved Finnish F/A-18 Hornet and Swedish JAS 39 Gripen aircraft monitoring a Russian group consisting of a Tu-134 transport aircraft, MiG-31 interceptors, and Su-30 fighters in international airspace. Major General Jonas Wikman, commander of the Swedish Air Force, noted the mission demonstrated the “seamless operational capability” built through years of cooperation.
