Finland confirmed its first case of African swine fever (ASF) in wild boar near the Russian border, with infected carcasses found in Virolahti (Vaalimaa). Authorities established a restricted infection zone covering the municipalities of Virolahti, Miehikkala and part of Lappeenranta. Within the zone hunting, forest work, berry and mushroom picking, and dog walking are prohibited, and movement of feed, straw and farm machinery is tightly controlled. Border crossings for wildlife on the Finland‑Russia frontier were closed in early August to prevent further spread.

The Finnish Food Authority (Ruokavirasto) has recommended halting pork and pork‑product exports to non‑EU markets until the outbreak is contained and export conditions are verified. As a result, Finland is no longer listed as ASF‑free by the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH). The country exported pork worth €74 million last year, including roughly €57 million to non‑EU destinations such as China and Japan, which may impose long‑term import restrictions following the outbreak.
