Finland ASF outbreak expands and impacts pork exports

Overview

In late July 2026, Finland confirmed its first cases of African swine fever (ASF) in wild boars near the Russian border, specifically in the Virolahti municipality. The Finnish Food Authority (Ruokavirasto) established a containment zone covering Virolahti, Miehikkälä, and southern Lappeenranta. This outbreak resulted in Finland losing its ASF-free status from the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH).

Major pork exporters Atria and HK Foods halted shipments to non-EU markets, including China, Japan, and South Korea. These export bans, which could last up to three years, threaten a sector that exports approximately €74 million annually. While the disease has not yet been detected in domestic pig farms, the Swedish farmers’ union warned of potential regional spread.

To contain the virus, authorities implemented strict bans on hunting, forestry work, berry and mushroom foraging, and off-leash dog walking within the zone. Forestry operations are prohibited, except for transporting already felled timber, and all machinery must be disinfected before leaving the area. Wildlife manager Jörgen Hermansson warned against bringing artisanal meat products from sources like Estonia.

By mid-August, the situation escalated as eleven new ASF cases were identified in wild boars in Virolahti, bringing the total to 14 cases since late July. This prompted authorities to expand the 1,500-square-kilometer restriction zone. Approximately 400 volunteers, mostly local hunters, are assisting in locating and sampling animals. Officials suggest the virus may have originated in Russia.

Parallel to the ASF outbreak, a highly lethal avian influenza strain affected 27 fur farms, leading to the culling of roughly 500,000 mink, foxes, and ferrets to prevent a wider zoonotic epidemic.
