Finland detains two Swedish citizens on espionage suspicion
Finnish authorities have detained two Swedish citizens, aged 37 and 40, on suspicion of espionage in the Lapland region. The Helsinki District Court has ordered provisional detention for the suspects following an investigation by the National Bureau of Investigation (KRP).
Preliminary investigations suggest the suspected illegal activities occurred between August 30 and September 12. While official targets have not been confirmed, speculation suggests the intelligence gathering may have been aimed at the European Arctic Summit held in Rovaniemi on September 13 and 14, which included high-level EU officials. Other potential targets include a new military airbase in the region.
The suspects, who share a surname and reside in Härnösand, Sweden, have no prior criminal record in Finland. Investigators have one week to gather further evidence before the court decides whether to extend their detention or grant conditional release. Espionage carries a potential prison sentence of one to ten years in Finland.
