Espionage investigation in Finland

Overview

Finnish authorities detained two Swedish citizens, aged 37 and 40, on suspicion of espionage in the Lapland region. The National Bureau of Investigation (KRP) conducted a preliminary investigation into activities suspected to have occurred between August 30 and September 12.

While official targets remain unconfirmed, investigators are looking into whether the intelligence gathering was aimed at a new military airbase or the European Arctic Summit held in Rovaniemi on September 13 and 14. The Helsinki District Court has ordered provisional detention for the suspects while investigators gather further evidence.
