Finland detects Colorado potato beetle in six eastern municipalities
The Finnish Food Authority (Ruokavirasto) has confirmed the presence of the Colorado potato beetle (Leptinotarsa decemlineata) on six sites in eastern and southeastern Finland this summer. The municipalities involved are Lahti, Kouvola, Savonlinna, Luumäki, Ruokolahti and Joensuu.
Two to three of the sites show evidence that the beetles overwintered in Finland, while the remaining locations are thought to have been invaded by beetles arriving with wind currents from the Baltic Sea and Russia. The beetle is not a permanent resident of the country, but officials warn that if it establishes a breeding population it could increase the workload and costs of potato crop protection.
Ruokavirasto stresses that the pest is a quarantine organism and that control actions are coordinated by the agency and regional food‑health centres. Farmers are urged to monitor potato fields through the harvest period, report any sightings, and refrain from self‑treatment, as the beetle can lay up to a thousand eggs and has two life cycles. According to Ruokavirasto section chief Annika Wickström, current eradication efforts are successful and there is no permanent beetle population yet, but continued vigilance is essential.
