Invasive beetle threats to European potato crops

In late July 2026 Finnish authorities reported the first confirmed presence of the Colorado potato beetle on six sites in eastern and southeastern Finland. While a few locations showed signs that the beetles had overwintered, most detections were attributed to wind‑borne arrivals from the Baltic Sea and Russia. The Finnish Food Authority emphasized that the pest is a quarantine organism, coordinated eradication efforts are underway, and farmers were urged to monitor fields and avoid self‑treatment.

A few days later, Croatian experts highlighted the long‑standing problem of the potato golden beetle, an invasive species first recorded in the country in the 1940s. The beetle continues to damage potatoes and other solanaceous crops, with multiple generations possible each season and growing resistance to insecticides. Authorities recommended integrated pest‑management practices, including scouting, hand‑picking, crop rotation, straw mulching, and biological control with Bacillus thuringiensis formulations.

Together, the reports illustrate a broader pattern of invasive beetle species posing renewed challenges to potato production across Europe, prompting coordinated monitoring and diversified control strategies in affected regions.
