Finland expands renewable energy and grid infrastructure

Finland is undergoing a significant energy transition as the country moves to replace fossil fuels with renewable electricity to support industrial electrification and economic growth. Suomen uusiutuvat ry emphasizes that a large number of wind and solar power projects are currently in the planning or zoning stages, which are essential for attracting new industrial investments and creating jobs.

To facilitate this shift, Fingrid is investing 5.2 billion euros into the national transmission grid over the next decade. A major component of this infrastructure plan is the Harjulinja project, a 400 kV power line connection between Pyhäjärvi's Murtoperä and Kouvola's Koria. This project aims to meet rising electricity demand and ensure grid security. Environmental impact assessments for the northern section began in 2025, with the southern section expected to follow in late 2026. The project is slated for construction between 2030 and 2032.
