African Swine Fever outbreaks reported in Finland and Hungary
African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreaks are spreading in Finland and Hungary, prompting significant biosecurity measures.
In Finland, the Finnish Food Authority has expanded the infection's core area following the detection of 11 new cases in wild boar, bringing the total to 14 since late July. The infections were found in the Virolahti municipality near the Russian border. Authorities have implemented a 1,500-square-kilometer restriction zone, prohibiting unauthorized access, forestry work, and the gathering of berries or mushrooms. Approximately 400 volunteers are assisting in searching for infected animals. Officials suggest the virus may have originated in Russia.
In Hungary, the National Food Chain Safety Office (Nébih) confirmed the presence of the virus in two domestic pig herds in Baranya county. This follows previous reports of the disease in Somogy county. In response, authorities have established 3 km and 10 km protection and monitoring zones around the affected farms and have ordered the culling of the infected livestock. While the disease poses a severe economic threat to the swine industry, officials emphasize it is not a zoonosis and does not pose a risk to human health.
