Finland government faces backlash over new abortion procedure fees

The Finnish government is facing intense political opposition following a decision to introduce new client fees for certain healthcare procedures, specifically affecting surgical abortions. Under the proposed compromise, abortions performed for medical reasons—such as those involving risks to the life or health of the mother or fetus—will remain free. However, elective surgical abortions that require specific procedures or examinations may incur a fee of approximately 257 euros.

Opposition parties, including the Social Democratic Party and the Left Alliance, have criticized the move, labeling it an ideological attempt to penalize non-medical abortions. They argue that the government is creating a system that prices abortion based on the reason for the procedure. In response, government ministers have stated that the opposition is spreading misinformation, clarifying that approximately 99 percent of abortions in Finland are medical and will not be subject to these new surgical fees.

In Helsinki, Mayor Daniel Sazonov has called for all surgical abortions within the Helsinki University Hospital (HUS) system to be free of charge, arguing that it is principledy problematic to categorize abortions based on their underlying causes.
