Finland plans 69 GW of new wind power capacity

Finland is planning nearly 69 gigawatts (GW) of new onshore and offshore wind power capacity, according to updated project statistics from Suomen uusiutuvat ry. The total investment value of these planned projects is estimated at approximately 17 billion euros.

The portfolio includes 386 onshore wind projects with a combined capacity of about 52.6 GW. Currently, nine of these projects (901 MW) are under construction, and 42 projects (3.7 GW) have received municipal building permits. Additionally, 11 offshore wind projects are planned for Finnish waters, totaling 16 GW of capacity, with two projects (880 MW) having completed zoning.

Anni Mikkonen, CEO of Suomen uusiutuvat ry, stated that domestic electricity production is a core part of Finland's economic policy. She noted that renewable energy provides significant direct investment and creates opportunities for large-scale industrial investments in data centers, hydrogen, and electric fuels, which could strengthen national competitiveness and economic growth.
