Finland confirmed its first case of African swine fever (ASF) after the virus was identified in three wild boars near Virolahti, a municipality on the Russian border. The Finnish Food Authority (Ruokavirasto) immediately established a containment zone covering the municipalities of Virolahti, Miehikkälä and the southern part of Lappeenranta, restricting pig movements and tightening bio‑security on farms.

The outbreak has led major pork exporters Atria and HK Foods to halt shipments to non‑EU markets, including China and Japan, with some bans projected to last up to three years. The Finnish pork sector, comprising roughly 600 farms that produced about 164 million kg of pork in 2025 and exported 23 million kg worth €74 million, faces significant economic losses. Analysts warn the restrictions could jeopardise the viability of some farms.

ASF does not affect humans or food safety, and exports to EU member states may continue. Authorities are testing all wild boar carcasses in the zone and monitoring the roughly 20 pig holdings inside it, one of which houses around 3 000 sows.
