Finland confirmed its first case of African swine fever (ASF) after laboratory tests identified the virus in three wild boars near the municipality of Virolahti, close to the Russian border. The Finnish Food Authority (Ruokavirasto) established a containment zone covering Virolahti, Miehikkälä and the southern part of Lappeenranta, restricting pig movements and banning forest work, berry picking and dog walking within the core area.

In response, major pork exporters Atria and HK Foods halted shipments to non‑EU markets, including China, Japan and South Korea. The export bans could last up to three years and are expected to cause tens to hundreds of millions of euros in losses for Finland’s pork sector, which comprises about 600 farms, produces roughly 164 million kg of pork annually and exports around 23 million kg worth €74 million. Authorities stress that ASF does not affect human health or food safety, but it is highly transmissible among pigs.

Swedish farmers’ union Lantbrukarnas riksförbund warned that Sweden could also be at risk of ASF spread from the Finnish outbreak, underscoring the broader regional concern.
