Finland receives first F-35 fighter jets in Rovaniemi

The first F-35 fighter jets are arriving in Finland, with the aircraft being stationed in Rovaniemi. The delivery schedule has been accelerated following orders from Air Force Commander Timo Herranen to bring the jets into operational use as quickly as possible, a move reflecting the heightened security situation in the region.

Finland’s selection of the American-made F-35 in 2021 was a strategic decision intended to deepen defense cooperation with the United States. Following Finland’s accession to NATO, these aircraft are expected to play a significant role on NATO’s northern flank to deter Russian aerial activity. Additionally, a defense cooperation agreement (DCA) allows for extensive U.S. military training and the storage of military supplies in Finland.

While the F-35 offers high combat performance, reports have noted challenges regarding fleet readiness. Some data indicates that maintenance and spare part shortages have previously limited the number of aircraft capable of performing all assigned mission types at any given time. However, military officials emphasize that when properly resourced with logistics and parts, the F-35 demonstrates high combat effectiveness.
