Finland integrates F-35 jets and engine assembly

Overview

The Finnish defense company Patria has completed the assembly of the first F135 engine for the Finnish Air Force’s F-35A fleet at its facility in Linnavuori, Nokia. Following an agreement with Pratt & Whitney, Patria is tasked with the assembly, maintenance, repair, and overhaul of these engines through 2030 to support the lifecycle of Finland’s 64 ordered F-35A aircraft. Future plans involve focusing on long-term maintenance, repair, and modernization of F135 engines to support the fleet through the 2060s.

As of October 2026, Finland has received four of its 64 ordered F-35A Lightning II aircraft. The first two, serial numbers JF-510 and JF-512, arrived at the Lapland Air Command in Rovaniemi on September 18, having been flown from Fort Worth, Texas, by U.S. Air Force pilots. On October 1, Finland officially received these first two permanently based aircraft during a ceremony attended by President Alexander Stubb and Minister of Defence Antti Häkkänen. President Stubb noted that the F-35 enhances defense capabilities in northeastern Europe, while Major General Timo Herranen described the aircraft as a “battlefield game-changer” essential for the current security environment.

On October 23, two additional aircraft, JF-509 and JF-511, arrived in Rovaniemi. JF-511 had previously remained at the Lajes Air Base in the Azores due to a technical issue involving a minor avionics fault, but it joined JF-509 for the final leg of the delivery. This procurement program, valued at approximately ten billion euros, aims to replace Finland’s aging F/A-18 Hornet fleet by 2030 and strengthen NATO’s northern flank.
