Finland receives first F-35A fighter aircraft

Finland has officially received its first two permanently based F-35A Lightning II fighter aircraft, marking a transition to fifth-generation combat capabilities for the Finnish Defence Forces. The aircraft, identified as JF-510 and JF-512, arrived at the Rovaniemi airbase in Lapland following their transfer from the United States.

The arrival ceremony was attended by high-ranking officials, including President Alexander Stubb, Minister of Defence Antti Häkkänen, and Major General Timo Herranen, Commander of the Finnish Air Force. President Stubb emphasized the importance of the transatlantic partnership and Arctic security, noting that the F-35 enhances defense capabilities in northeastern Europe.

Major General Herranen stated that the F-35 is a requirement for the current security environment, providing advanced capabilities in information sharing, accuracy, and survivability. The integration of these aircraft is intended to strengthen Finland’s ability to deter aggression and defend its sovereignty as a member of NATO.
