Finland receives first F-35A fighter jets at Rovaniemi Air Base
The first two Lockheed Martin F-35A fighter jets destined for Finland arrived at the Rovaniemi Air Base on September 18, 2026. These aircraft mark the beginning of a new phase in Finland’s defense strategy to replace its aging fleet of Boeing F/A-18C/D Hornets, which have been in service for over 30 years.
A third F-35A, identified as JF-511, did not complete the transatlantic flight and remained at the Lajes Air Base in the Azores due to a technical issue. The nature of the malfunction was not disclosed, but the aircraft is expected to proceed to Finland once technical checks are completed. The arrival of these jets follows a procurement process that began in earnest in 2021, a decision that has since been viewed through the lens of shifting global security dynamics following the invasion of Ukraine.
The integration of the F-35A is a key component of Finland’s defense capabilities as a NATO member, reinforcing its aerial security amidst evolving warfare methods and geopolitical uncertainties.
