Finland receives first two F-35A fighter aircraft

Finland has officially received its first two permanently based F-35A aircraft, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s largest defense procurement to date. The arrival ceremony was held at the Lapland Air Command in Rovaniemi, attended by Finnish military leaders, government officials, and representatives from Lockheed Martin and allied nations.

The acquisition, valued at approximately ten billion euros, was decided in December 2021. While the conflict in Ukraine has sparked debates regarding the utility of expensive fighter jets versus inexpensive drones, security experts argue that the two technologies are complementary rather than substitutes. Experts suggest that drones do not replace manned combat aircraft any more than artillery replaces air forces.

The introduction of these 5th generation systems is intended to strengthen Finland’s sovereignty and deterrence capabilities within the Nordic region and the NATO alliance, providing advanced information sharing and survivability in evolving security environments.
