Finland receives first F-35A fighter jets in Rovaniemi

Finland has received its first two F-35A Lightning II fighter jets, which arrived at the Lapland Air Command in Rovaniemi on September 18. The aircraft, serial numbers JF-510 and JF-512, were flown from Lockheed Martin's facility in Fort Worth, Texas, by U.S. Air Force pilots. This delivery marks the beginning of a program to replace Finland's aging fleet of 64 F/A-18 Hornet jets by 2030.

Major General Timo Herranen, commander of the Finnish Air Force, characterized the F-35 as a battlefield game-changer. He noted that the aircraft's advanced sensors and data fusion capabilities will enhance situational awareness across land, sea, and air networks, integrating more effectively with NATO's collective defense.

In a separate strategic development, Finland joined France's advanced nuclear deterrence initiative on September 14. This partnership aims to strengthen European security, with Finland becoming the tenth state to join the French-led framework.
