Finland social and health organizations face major funding cuts

Social and health sector organizations in Finland face significant funding reductions, with over 80 million euros in grants (STEA) expected to be cut next year. This has led to widespread concerns regarding the continuity of essential services.

Surveys indicate that 80 percent of social and health organizations may have to cease certain activities, including 73 percent potentially cutting peer support or group activities and 69 percent reducing advisory and guidance services. Approximately 40 percent of organizations consider the total cessation of their operations a possibility.

Critics, including SDP's Filatov, argue that these cuts may lead to higher long-term costs for the state. As organizations provide preventative care and support for victims of violence, mental health sufferers, and caregivers, their absence may shift the burden of care onto public services. The social and health sector in Finland includes over 9,000 organizations with approximately 1.3 million members and 500,000 volunteers, whose contribution to well-being is valued at nearly 3.2 billion euros annually.
