Sweden bolsters Finnish defense with jets and ships

Sweden is increasing its military support to Finland to bolster air and maritime surveillance along the 1,340-kilometre border with Russia. Following a request from Helsinki due to a deteriorating security situation and frequent airspace incursions by drones, the Swedish military will deploy Gripen fighter jets and a corvette warship to assist in monitoring Finnish territory. This deployment is expected to last at least until the end of 2026, aiming to free up Finnish resources for responding to direct incidents.

In addition to aerial and naval assets, Sweden may provide ground-based anti-drone systems to enhance regional defense. Separately, the Swedish defense company Saab has secured a 1.2 billion krona ($126 million) order from Finland for the RBS 70 NG portable air-defense missile system.

In a related defense development, Sweden is proceeding with a major naval modernization program, signing a contract to purchase four FDI-class frigates from the French manufacturer Naval Group. The deal, valued at approximately 4.3 billion euros, aims to strengthen Sweden's maritime security and high-intensity combat capabilities, with the first vessel expected to be delivered in 2030.
