Finland welcomes first F-35A Lightning II fighter jets

Finland has officially welcomed its first two F-35A Lightning II fighter jets at the Lapland Air Wing in Rovaniemi. The arrival of aircraft JF-510 and JF-512 marks a significant milestone in the nation's decade-long HX fighter program.

The ceremony was attended by high-ranking officials, including Finnish President Alexander Stubb, Minister of Defence Antti Häkkänen, and U.S. Ambassador to Finland Howard W. Brodie. The transition from the legacy F/A-18 Hornet fleet to the fifth-generation F-35A is intended to strengthen Finland's defense capabilities and enhance interoperability with NATO allies.

Finland plans to operate a total of 64 F-35A jets. These aircraft are designed to integrate information across multiple domains, supporting land and sea combat through advanced sensors and electronic warfare capabilities. Additionally, Finnish industry is preparing to support the fleet by producing components such as fuselage sections and landing-gear doors.
