Finnish authorities uncover massive illegal cigarette smuggling operation

Finnish Customs and police have uncovered two major illegal cigarette smuggling operations occurring during the spring and summer. Authorities estimate that at least 40 million cigarettes were illegally imported into Finland, with 11 million units already seized during investigations.

One significant operation involved a warehouse in Hämeenkyrö, Pirkanmaa, which served as a distribution hub. Investigations revealed that six shipments containing approximately 26 million cigarettes were transported from Latvia to this location. This specific operation alone resulted in an estimated 10.5 million euros in evaded tobacco taxes and a projected 2.5 million euros in criminal profit.

The smuggling activities focused on the regions of Pirkanmaa, Kanta-Häme, and Uusimaa. Customs officials noted that illegal tobacco imports in Finland are becoming increasingly professional and organized. Seven individuals are suspected of aggravated tax fraud, five of whom are Finnish nationals.

In a separate investigation in Orivesi, police discovered five large shipments of cigarettes that had been hidden on truck pallets alongside legal cargo. The total estimated tax evasion across these investigated cases reaches approximately 16.5 million euros.
