Finnish study links childhood screen time to better adolescent cognition

An eight-year longitudinal study conducted by the University of Jyväskylä and the University of Eastern Finland suggests a correlation between childhood screen time and improved cognitive processing in adolescence. The research, part of the PANIC study, followed 260 children (124 girls and 136 boys) until they reached an average age of 15.8 years.

Findings published in Pediatric Exercise Science indicate that children with higher cumulative screen use during childhood tended to perform better on cognitive tests measuring learning, attention, and working memory as teenagers. However, researchers emphasize that this is an observational association rather than proof of causality. They note that the specific type of activity—such as problem-solving, creativity, or active learning—may be more significant than the total number of hours spent on devices.

Researchers cautioned against viewing screen time as purely harmful, suggesting that the focus should be on encouraging digital use that stimulates active thinking and finding a balance with physical activity.
