Finnish study links childhood screen time to adolescent cognitive skills

An eight-year longitudinal study conducted by researchers at the University of Jyväskylä and the University of Eastern Finland suggests that screen time in childhood may be associated with improved cognitive abilities in adolescence. Part of the PANIC (Physical Activity and Nutrition in Children) study, the research tracked 260 children—124 girls and 136 boys—from ages 6 to 8 until they reached an average age of nearly 16.

Published in the journal Pediatric Exercise Science, the findings indicate that higher cumulative screen time during childhood correlated with better performance in cognitive tests measuring processing speed, attention, and working memory. Researchers emphasize that the quality and nature of screen activities are more significant than the total duration. Activities involving problem-solving, creativity, and active learning are thought to provide mental stimulation, whereas passive consumption may differ in impact.

The study also noted gender-specific links between physical activity and cognitive function: regular light physical activity was associated with better working memory in girls, while guided physical activity was linked to better working memory in boys. Researchers cautioned that this is an observational study showing association rather than direct causation, and they stressed the importance of balancing screen use with physical activity.
