Finnish study links childhood screen time to improved adolescent cognition

Research from the Physical Activity and Nutrition in Children (PANIC) study in Finland suggests a complex relationship between childhood screen use and adolescent cognitive abilities. Following 506 children over approximately eight years, researchers from the Universities of Jyväskylä and Eastern Finland examined how digital habits, physical activity, and sitting time influence thinking skills.

The study found that children who accumulated more screen time from childhood onward tended to demonstrate better cognitive processing, including improved reaction times and accuracy in working memory tests during adolescence. This contrasts with the assumption that increased device usage is universally detrimental to mental performance.

However, researchers emphasize that the type of activity is a critical factor. The benefits may be linked to active digital engagement—such as learning, problem-solving, or creating—rather than passive content consumption. The findings suggest that the nature of screen interaction may affect brain development differently than simple sedentary behavior.
