Finland social welfare reforms face budget cut concerns
Proposed reforms to Finland's social welfare laws and significant budget reductions are raising concerns regarding the accessibility of essential services. The government is pursuing reforms to the Social Welfare Act aimed at achieving 100 million euros in savings, which may result in the consolidation of family counseling and family work services under a new support structure for families with children.
Additionally, funding from STEA is projected to decrease significantly, dropping from approximately 384 million euros in 2024 to 190 million euros by 2027. This includes an immediate reduction of roughly 84 million euros next year. Such cuts are expected to impact mental health services, substance abuse treatment, crisis assistance, and peer support networks. Critics argue these measures could undermine preventative care and the ability to provide timely professional assistance to families in crisis.
