Finns Party proposes 9 billion euro savings plan

The Finns Party has unveiled a comprehensive 9 billion euro savings and tax reform proposal for the upcoming government term. The plan includes 8 billion euros in direct tax savings and 1 billion euros in new tax measures, such as a data center tax, taxing tax-free foundations, and a new banking tax concept. Additionally, the party seeks a one-time saving of 1 billion euros by abolishing Sitra.

Administrative cuts totaling 1.3 billion euros are proposed, which could be achieved by not filling roles left by retirees. The proposal includes the dissolution of the Ministry of the Environment, the Finnish National Agency for Education, and the Natural Resources Institute Finland. The party also advocates for making social security based on citizenship.

Opposition figures have criticized the plan. Green Party MP Inka Hopsu described the proposals as radical and populist, warning they could undermine international development cooperation and human rights. Former Minister of Health and Social Services Aino-Kaisa Pekonen argued the cuts would dismantle the welfare state, potentially leading to the layoffs of thousands of nurses and teachers while increasing unemployment.
