Fintraffic finds half of drivers exceed speed limits on Finnish highways

Fintraffic’s 2025 road‑speed study shows that roughly 50 % of drivers on Finland’s main highways exceed the posted speed limits. The share rises from 47 % in summer to 55 % in winter, and violations of more than 10 km/h occur in 10 % of drivers in summer and 12 % in winter. The data, collected from 268 automatic traffic measurement stations, indicate that lower winter speed limits are broken more often, even though they reduce average speeds by 5–7 km/h.

Fintraffic service manager Eetu Karhunensano and Traficom expert Riikka Rajamäki note that even small speeding increases the risk of serious accidents. Between 2019 and 2023, 51 % of drivers involved in fatal motor‑vehicle crashes were speeding, with 44 % exceeding the limit by more than 10 km/h. The findings underline the safety impact of speed compliance on Finnish roads.
