Fiocruz reports rising SRAG incidence in five Brazilian states

The latest InfoGripe bulletin from Fiocruz indicates that while national trends for Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SRAG) are stabilizing or oscillating, five Brazilian states—Goiás, Maranhão, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, and Rio de Janeiro—show incidence levels at alert, risk, or high risk with an increasing long-term trend.

There is a sustained increase in SRAG cases among children and adolescents aged 2 to 14, primarily driven by rhinovirus. In Mato Grosso, the increase affects children and adolescents aged 5 to 14 as well as seniors over 65, potentially linked to influenza B. In Rio de Janeiro, metapneumovirus has also contributed to the rise in younger age groups.

In Acre, although there has been an increase in SRAG cases caused by rhinovirus, the state is not currently classified among those with an increasing long-term trend and has a 75% probability of a decrease in cases. Nationally, the decline or stabilization in other age groups is attributed to a decrease in influenza hospitalizations and a drop in severe cases caused by Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV).
