Brazil SRAG incidence rises in several states

Overview

By mid-September 2026, epidemiological data from Fiocruz’s InfoGripe bulletin indicates that while national trends for Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SRAG) are stabilizing or oscillating, several states are reporting increasing long-term trends. Specifically, Goiás, Maranhão, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, and Rio de Janeiro have reached alert, risk, or high-risk levels.

A sustained increase in SRAG cases is being observed among children and adolescents aged 2 to 14, primarily driven by rhinovirus. In Mato Grosso, the rising incidence affects children and adolescents aged 5 to 14, as well as seniors over 65, with potential links to influenza B. In Rio de Janeiro, metapneumovirus has also contributed to rising cases in younger age groups.

Nationally, the decline or stabilization in other age groups is attributed to a decrease in influenza hospitalizations and a drop in severe cases caused by Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV). While Acre has seen an increase in rhinovirus-related cases, the state is not classified as having an increasing long-term trend and maintains a 75% probability of a decrease in cases.

Previously, Mato Grosso reported a concentration of cases among children aged 2 to 4 years and had administered over 750,000 influenza vaccine doses, primarily targeting seniors and children under six. Although incidence is high among young children, mortality remains most concentrated in the population aged 65 and older.
