FIOM CGIL warns of economic instability and manufacturing decline in Lecco

The FIOM CGIL union in Lecco has issued a warning regarding Italy’s current economic and social instability. Ivan Martorano, the union's general secretary for Lecco, noted that while exports showed growth in the first quarter, the manufacturing sector—the economic backbone of the Lecco region—is experiencing a contraction of 1.2%.

Martorano highlighted structural weaknesses in the labor market, noting that 62% of new contracts in the area are temporary. Economic pressures are being exacerbated by high inflation and rising fuel costs. Furthermore, the local metallurgy industry faces significant uncertainty due to a court ruling regarding the closure of the hot area at the Ilva steel plant in Taranto, which could disrupt the primary steel supply vital to local production.
