Fire at Versalis petrochemical plant in Mantova triggers evacuations and political response

A fire broke out at the Versalis polymer warehouse in Mantova, Italy, prompting the rapid evacuation of around 800 people within 15 minutes. The blaze produced a visible plume of smoke that reached parts of the Verona area, but authorities said atmospheric conditions and the distance of the plant from the regional border reduced the risk of significant air‑quality impacts. The regional environmental agency (ARPA) and local officials, including Environment Assessor Elisa Venturini, continued to monitor the situation, noting that only a potential increase in wind could lead to odor perception.

In the political arena, the Fratelli d'Italia (FdI) group of city councillors demanded an extraordinary municipal council meeting—potentially held online—to discuss safety measures and to set up a dialogue with opposition forces. They highlighted longstanding concerns about the petrochemical site’s environmental and safety risks, as well as the nearby railway line and a €40 million RFI under‑pass project that could increase freight traffic of hazardous materials.
