Fire at Vicopisano Plastic Plant Prompts Ongoing Cleanup and Air‑Quality Monitoring in Tuscany

An industrial fire broke out at a plastics processing plant in Vicopisano, Tuscany, on 9 June 2026. Fire‑fighting crews have completed extinguishing operations and are now securing the site while remediation work continues.

Environmental authorities are sampling vegetation from four points west of the blaze and additional locations east and north of the site. Tested plant material, leafy vegetables and fruit tree leaves are being analysed for contaminant residues. Air‑quality stations in Pisa and Santa Croce sull’Arno recorded a modest rise in NO₂ up to 25 µg/m³ and elevated particulate levels (PM₁₀ above 20 µg/m³, PM₂.₅ up to 14 µg/m³), all remaining well below legal limits of 200 µg/m³ for NO₂, 50 µg/m³ for PM₁₀ and 25 µg/m³ for PM₂.₅. Further monitoring will extend to neighboring municipalities to assess any broader impact of the smoke plume.
