French insurers to cover relocation costs for 220,000 fire‑evacuees
Massive wildfires in the Gironde, Landes and Var regions have burned roughly 42,000 ha and forced the evacuation of about 220,000 people. More than 13,000 businesses – around 7,000 artisans and 6,300 traders – have been shut down, leaving an estimated 130,000 employees unable to work.
The French government announced that all insurers will reimburse relocation expenses for up to three weeks for primary residences, even when the homes are not damaged, and will extend the deadline for filing fire‑damage claims to 31 August (instead of the usual five days). Partial‑unemployment schemes have been opened for affected firms.
Aid is being coordinated by NGOs such as ADRA, Secours populaire, the Fondation de France, and the Red Cross, which are mobilising donations, emergency vouchers and basic‑needs kits. The firefighting effort has involved roughly 2,500 firefighters, 1,500 military personnel, 1,200 police and gendarmes, and 450 volunteers, supported by dozens of aerial assets including Canadair, Dash‑8, Air‑Tractor and an A400M Atlas.
The insurer federation France Assureurs warned that insurance premiums in high‑risk areas are likely to rise. Environmental officials highlighted severe impacts on wildlife, with unknown but potentially catastrophic losses to fauna.
