San José de Comondú wildfire devastates homes, prompts state emergency response

A wildfire ignited near the Palmar of San José de Comondú in Baja California Sur, spreading rapidly due to strong winds, high temperatures and combustible vegetation. Authorities say the fire may have started from the improper burning of waste. The blaze affected between 30 and 40 houses, with at least 15 completely consumed, and caused severe damage to homes, vehicles and other property, though no fatalities or serious injuries were reported.

Multiple agencies responded, including the Comondú fire brigade, CONAFOR, the Mexican army, the National Guard, state police and civil protection volunteers. Municipal president Roberto Pantoja confirmed possible responsible parties and organized aid centers in the DIF municipal office, with support from neighboring municipalities.

Governor Víctor Manuel Castro Cosío visited the affected area to assess damage, register the displaced families and launch the distribution of food, water, clothing and medical assistance. The state emergency plan was activated to provide immediate relief and to begin reconstruction efforts for the families who lost their homes.
