Firefighter faces arrest for fatal shooting of medical student in São Paulo

A military firefighter, Marcos Paulo Fujarra de Oliveira, faces arrest following a fatal shooting during a traffic dispute in Taubaté, São Paulo. The victim, 23-year-old medical student Bruno Hashimura San Juliano, died from his injuries after being shot on September 30.

Although a preventive arrest warrant was issued by the Court of Justice of São Paulo on Friday, execution was delayed due to electoral laws that prohibit the arrest of voters during the five days preceding an election and the 48 hours following it. The restriction expires at 5:00 PM on Tuesday. Oliveira’s defense attorney stated that the 28-year-old intends to surrender to police voluntarily.

Following the initial incident, Oliveira was released on provisional liberty with precautionary measures, but the Public Ministry successfully appealed for his preventive detention. While the prosecution seeks justice for the homicide, the defense maintains that Oliveira acted in self-defense. The victim was a fourth-semester medical student at the University of Taubaté and leaves behind a two-year-old child.
