Taubaté traffic dispute homicide investigation

Overview

In Taubaté, São Paulo, 23-year-old medical student Bruno Hashimura San Juliano was shot and killed following a traffic dispute on Avenida do Povo. The suspect, 28-year-old military firefighter Marcos Paulo Fujarra de Oliveira, was arrested at the scene. Authorities have since indicted de Oliveira for qualified homicide, citing a futile motive and the victim’s inability to defend himself. Due to Brazilian electoral laws that prohibit the arrest of voters during the election period, the warrant for his preventive arrest could only be executed after Tuesday, October 6, at 5:00 PM. Following the expiration of these legal restrictions, de Oliveira’s defense attorney stated that the suspect intends to surrender to police voluntarily. The victim, a fourth-semester medical student at the University of Taubaté, leaves behind a two-year-old child.
