Firefighter Nathan Matthews Honored with Colorado Motorcade and Community Memorial

Nathan Matthews, a former Vail resident and U.S. Wildland Fire Service firefighter, died on July 24 from injuries sustained in the June 27 burnover of the Knowles Fire near the Colorado‑Utah border. He was one of five firefighters caught in the incident, which also claimed the lives of Emily Barker, Nick Hutcherson and Sydney Watson.

A motorcade organized by the U.S. Wildland Fire Service, U.S. Forest Service, Colorado Division of Fire Prevention & Control, Colorado Bureau of Investigation and Colorado State Patrol will escort Matthews' remains from the Denver Federal Center to the Bureau of Land Management facilities in Grand Junction along I‑70 on Friday. The public is invited to watch safely from overpasses, though drivers are asked not to stop in travel lanes. Senator John Hickenlooper honored the families on the Senate floor, calling for answers to prevent future tragedies. A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to support Matthews' family and the firefighting community.
