Colorado wildland firefighter deaths

In late June 2026, a burnover during the Knowles Fire near the Colorado‑Utah border caused the deaths of five U.S. Wildland Fire Service firefighters, including Nathan Matthews, a 43‑year‑old from Lincoln, Nebraska. The incident prompted a serious accident investigation and marked the fifth firefighter fatality in Colorado that year.

By the end of July, the fire service and state agencies organized a motorcade and community memorial for Matthews. His remains were escorted from Denver to Grand Junction along I‑70, with public viewing from overpasses. Senator John Hickenlooper honored the families on the Senate floor and a GoFund Me campaign was launched to support Matthews’ family and fellow firefighters. The Knowles Fire later merged into the larger Snyder Fire, which burned about 30,200 acres before containment.
