Firefighters combat wildfires and accidents in France’s Ariège and Aveyron
In the Ariège department, a wildfire at Les Bordes‑Uchentein that began on 10 July has burned around 70 hectares of scrub and brush on inaccessible mountain terrain. The fire cannot be reached by ground crews, so two water‑bombing aircraft have performed 96 aerial drops, supported by 26 firefighters and national reinforcement. A smaller blaze on Montségur (3 ha) was contained on 14 July. Sub‑prefect Emilie Barromes urged residents and hikers to limit forest‑area travel and warned that access could be restricted.
In the neighboring Aveyron department, emergency services were stretched over the weekend of 11‑12 July. Incidents included a serious pool accident involving a 77‑year‑old man, multiple agricultural and straw fires that destroyed hay, tractors and fertilizer, a lightning‑triggered cabin fire, and several road crashes – one an overturned car on the RD 920, a fatal motorbike collision that killed a 53‑year‑old rider, and a three‑vehicle collision that left a 17‑year‑old in critical condition. Firefighters also assisted with a fire in the adjacent Lot department. Together, these events required extensive rescue operations and highlighted the challenges of managing simultaneous wildfires and accidents.
