Firefighting helicopter crashes into Lake Aoos in Grevena, crew unharmed

A Bell‑type firefighting helicopter operated by the Greek Fire Service crashed into the artificial Lake Aoos near the village of Abgo in the Grevena region while conducting a water‑scooping operation. The aircraft was one of several rented helicopters used during the anti‑fire season.

The pilot, co‑pilot (a Greek and a foreign crew member) and a third passenger were rescued from the lake and transferred to a hospital in Ioannina; all were reported to be in good health. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident, but no further injuries were reported.

The incident highlights the hazardous conditions faced by aerial fire‑fighting crews during Greece’s intensive wildfire fighting period.
