Mozilla updates Firefox Smart Window with AI search and tab grouping

Mozilla has announced several updates to its AI-powered Smart Window feature in Firefox, currently in beta for users in the United States and Canada. The update introduces three primary capabilities: AI-driven web search, automatic tab grouping, and visual browsing history previews.

Through a new partnership with the AI search company Exa, Smart Window can now retrieve real-time information from the internet and provide direct citations for its answers. This allows users to verify information without navigating away from the assistant. Mozilla emphasized that the partnership aligns with its privacy principles, specifically citing Exa’s zero data retention policy.

To improve organization, the tool can now suggest groups for related tabs and detect duplicate tabs for easy removal. Additionally, the feature includes a visual history component that allows users to find previously visited pages using natural language prompts—such as describing a product they saw—by displaying visual snapshots of the pages rather than just URLs or titles.

Mozilla positions Smart Window as an opt-in, user-controlled experience designed to prevent users from being locked into a single AI ecosystem. The feature is intended to help users manage complex research tasks and pick up where they left off during browsing sessions.
