Mozilla Firefox AI integration and feature updates

Mozilla is expanding the functionality of the Firefox browser through various AI-driven features and interface updates.

Initial developments included the introduction of new widgets for the Firefox New Tab page, most notably an AI-powered daily crossword. This puzzle is generated by Particle, an AI news platform that creates clues based on daily headlines. Other available widgets include a to-do list, stock checker, and weather display.

Subsequent updates focused on the Smart Window, a beta in-browser AI assistant. Through a partnership with the AI company Exa, the assistant can pull current information from the internet with direct citations. Mozilla noted that this partnership aligns with its privacy principles due to Exa’s ‘zero data retention policy.’

Recent updates to the Smart Window, currently in beta for users in the United States and Canada, have expanded its research and organizational capabilities. The tool now features AI-driven web search and a visual browsing history component. This visual component allows users to locate previously visited pages using natural language prompts by displaying visual snapshots of the pages rather than just URLs or titles.

To assist with tab management, the update introduces automatic tab grouping suggestions and the ability to detect and remove duplicate tabs. Mozilla positions the Smart Window as an opt-in, user-controlled experience intended to help users manage complex research tasks without being locked into a single AI ecosystem.
