Fitch warns of challenges for US AI data center projects

Fitch Ratings has reported that artificial intelligence data center projects in the United States are facing increasing difficulties. These challenges stem from potential regulatory changes at the state level and delays in electricity supply.

Significant portions of data center developments are concentrated in Texas, Georgia, and Ohio. Fitch noted that new administrations in these states could implement stricter permitting conditions or measures to limit construction. Such actions could include moratoriums and increased demands for transparency regarding energy costs, water resources, and community impacts.

If new approval conditions or moratoriums are enacted, projects may face delays and increased costs. Furthermore, difficulties in securing electricity and water permits, or the removal of tax incentives, could slow new investments and extend project timelines.
