Five Argentine mountains selected for international tourism award

Five Argentine mountains have been selected to represent the country in the 2026 ‘World Famous Mountains’ international competition. The initiative, promoted by the International Mountain Tourism Alliance (IMTA), recognizes destinations with exceptional natural, cultural, and tourism attributes.

The selected sites include Aconcagua in Mendoza, Champaquí in Córdoba, Mercedario in San Juan, and the Copahue volcano in Neuquén, which fall under the natural category. The Nevado de Famatina in La Rioja was selected in the cultural category.

The selection process involved evaluating 18 nominations from 10 provinces. Criteria included the quality of natural and cultural resources, conservation, tourism development, infrastructure, sustainability, local community support, and institutional backing. The process received validation from the Argentine Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Committee for the Sustainable Development of Mountainous Regions of Argentina.
