Nepal: Five bodies found after Himalayan avalanche
Rescue workers in Nepal have discovered five bodies at the site of a fatal avalanche on Yalung Ri, a 5,630-meter peak near the Tibet border. The discovery comes approximately nine months after a group of 15 climbers was struck by an avalanche in November 2025.
Local authorities, including Biswash Karki of the Gaurishankar Rural Municipality, believe the remains belong to the missing climbers. The group of five includes three foreigners—an Italian-Canadian, an Italian, and a German—and two Nepali nationals. One of the missing is identified as Italian biologist Marco Di Marcello.
Recovery efforts via helicopter have been hindered by poor weather conditions. While the bodies have been sighted due to melting snow, official identification is pending. The accident originally left several climbers missing, though eight members of the original group were previously rescued.
