Himalayan avalanche climber recovery
Overview
In August 2026, rescue workers in Nepal recovered the bodies of five climbers who had been missing since a fatal avalanche on Yalung Ri in November 2025. The remains were located at an altitude of approximately 5,400 meters in the Yalung Ri/Rolwaling region due to melting snow.
The deceased are believed to include two Italian climbers, Marco Di Marcello and Markus Kirchler, along with an Italian-Canadian, a German, and a Nepali national. The recovery operation, conducted on Sunday, August 9, was led by local climber Phurba Tenzing Sherpa and supported by a helicopter after a window of favorable weather opened. The operation was a joint effort involving Dreamers Destination Treks and Wilderness Outdoor.
The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Farnesina) is coordinating with the Italian Consulate in Calcutta and local authorities in Kathmandu to manage the repatriation of the bodies or ashes. Following the discovery, the family of Marco Di Marcello expressed deep distress, publicly criticizing Italian institutions for a “perceived lack of support and guidance” during the months of uncertainty. The Italian diplomatic network has stated it has maintained contact with the families and local rescue agencies throughout the search efforts.
