On 24–25 July 2026 a seven‑person expedition from Zenica, Bosnia and Herzegovina attempted to summit Mount Elbrus (5 642 m) in Russia’s Kabardino‑Balkaria. A sudden weather shift produced a snowstorm with winds rising from 45 km/h to 70 km/h, forcing the group to halt at roughly 5 100 m. Two climbers, Haris Adilović and Kemal Vidimlić, descended and alerted rescue services; both were later air‑lifted to hospitals. Five teammates – Meliha Čaušević, Alma Okanović, Denis Okanović, Almir Krivdić and Nermin Talam – were found dead. The bodies of two victims were recovered at about 5 350 m altitude, while the remaining three bodies have been located but cannot yet be evacuated because of the severe weather. The Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations continued rescue operations and the Russian Investigative Committee opened a criminal investigation into the deaths. Bosnia’s foreign minister Elmedin Konaković confirmed the fatalities, and the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina declared a day of mourning. The incident has drawn attention to the rapid‑change micro‑climate on Europe’s highest peak.
