Bosnian climbers on Elbrus – five dead, rescue halted

Overview

The seven‑person Bosnian‑Herzegovinian expedition that reached the summit of Mount Elbrus on 23 July was caught in a sudden storm on 25 July at about 5 100 m. Five members – Alma and Denis Okanović, Dr Meliha Čaušević, Almir Krivdić and Nermin Talam – have been confirmed dead. Two climbers, Haris Adilović and Kemal Vidimlić, descended unaided, were rescued and are receiving hospital care for frostbite, hypothermia and shock.

Russian emergency services recovered the bodies of two victims at roughly 5 350 m but, because of extreme winds, low visibility and severe cold, could not evacuate the remaining three. The search and recovery operation continues under hazardous conditions, with authorities monitoring the forecast closely.

On 26 July Russian teams reported that the storm’s wind speeds of 45–70 km/h halted further rescue attempts, and a criminal investigation into possible negligence was opened. Bosnian Foreign Minister Elmedin Konaković confirmed the fatalities, announced a day of mourning in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and coordinated the repatriation of the bodies.

Both governments remain engaged as rescue efforts persist amid difficult weather.
