Zenica holds commemoration for Elbrus mountaineers

Overview

The city of Zenica has held a large-scale commemoration and funeral for the five mountaineers killed during the July 25 ascent of Mount Elbrus. The deceased, identified as spouses Alma and Denis Okanović, Dr. Meliha Čaušević, Nermin Talam, and Almir Krivdić, were members of the Zenica Mountain Rescue Service and the Vedro Mountaineering Society.

Following the earlier repatriation of survivors Haris Adilović and Kemal Vidimlić, the memorial proceedings included a ceremony at the Bosnian National Theater, followed by joint funeral services and burial at the Prašnice cemetery. In accordance with the official declaration by Mayor Fuad Kasumović, August 18 was observed as a Day of Mourning for the city.

While the Zenica community mourns these victims, Russian emergency services have launched a separate search and rescue operation on the southern slope of Mount Elbrus for a different group of eight mountaineers who failed to make contact.
