Five European nations plan offshore deportation centers

Five European nations—Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, Austria, and Greece—have agreed on a plan to establish deportation centers in non-EU countries to house rejected asylum seekers. The initiative aims to manage individuals who cannot be immediately returned to their countries of origin.

The participating states intend to fully fund these facilities and may offer host nations additional incentives, such as commercial partnerships or financial support. While the specific host countries have not been officially named, reports suggest Uganda and Rwanda are being considered as potential partners.

Negotiations are currently in a crucial phase, with officials aiming to sign the first partnership agreement by the end of the year. The goal is to begin transferring individuals to these offshore hubs by late 2027. Danish Migration Minister Morten Bødskov noted that the centers are intended to provide migrants with the opportunity to continue their lives in partner countries rather than serving as detention camps.
